Amart Furniture is excited to partner with stylist Jackie Brown to bring you the latest looks for your home with the Smart Styling series. In the August edition, Jackie demonstrates how to style a cosy winter room. On this page you'll find the products Jackie used to create the beautiful look you see above.

Are you keen to create your own cosy winter living room? Jackie suggests starting with a big, comfy piece of furniture like a sofa – opt for something with a classic design and a contemporary upholstery, such as our Country Sofa shown here. If you have the space, a stylish and cosy armchair is also a great way to complement your sofa and provide seating for guests, while a great feature coffee table will anchor everything. A coordinating sideboard is a nice way to complete the ensemble. Jackie has chosen matching pieces from the stylishly simple Le Franschhoek range to evoke a laid-back country vibe.

Other key pieces for your winter hideaway includes soft furnishings that you can snuggle up in. For Jackie, it's all about the layers. Start with some floor rugs – try layering a smaller one, like a hide, over a large one, for a wonderfully welcoming effect. On the sofa and armchairs, place piles of cushions and throws, and on your coffee table and sideboard, arrange candles, books and a vase with some wintry foliage. If you're lucky enough to have a fireplace mantel, don't forget to place accessories there too.

When it comes to adding personality, Jackie recommends incorporating Scandinavian or country motifs into your living room. Faux furs, rustic timber finishes and animal prints on cushions (check out the Deer me Deer cushion used above) will all help you create your cosy winter look, while mixing up textures can add decorative interest. Try pairing a cable-knit throw with a leather cushion on your sofa or placing a ceramic vase in front of a mirror.

Jackie's top tips for creating the winter hideaway look on a budget:

  • Instead of buying a bouquet of flowers, fill a vase with bare twigs or small branches (from your garden!) to get a cool, rustic look
  • Put a basket next to the sofa and fill it with extra throw blankets. Not only will they come in handy on a cold night, but they are perfect during movie watching
  • Create a warming glow by grouping several pillar candles together on a tray or platter. Position it to the side on your buffet or make it an eye-catching centrepiece by placing it on your coffee table.
