Six things to consider when buying kids cushions
1. Cushion fillings
When looking to buy the right pillow or cushion, you’ll need to consider what’s inside as well as what’s on the outside. A popular cushion filling is polyester as it makes for a plump, lightweight cushion that will keep its shape over time.
Pillow fillings are a bit trickier to choose. As your little one will be sleeping on the pillow every night, it’s important to choose a filling and lining that is safe and provides the right density to support them for their age. It’s best that toddler pillows are firm pillows with just enough softness to be comfortable. Down pillows may aggravate allergies so stick with a natural fibre that is hypoallergenic, such as cotton or organic cotton. Microfibre pillows are a top pick as they are silky soft, highly absorbent and breathable to keep toddlers dry all year round.
Kids pillows can be firm, medium or soft and squishy. The type of pillow that is best for each sleeper will depend on their individual needs. If your child sleeps on their back, a medium profile pillow can help to keep their head raised without straining the neck or shoulders. Side sleepers may sleep better on soft pillows that reduce pressure points in the ears.
Memory foam pillows are very dense and contour to the head and neck for perfect support. Latex pillows are similar but have more bounce and return to their original shape more easily.
To extend the lifespan of your child’s pillow, consider adding a pillow protector. The best type of pillow protector is waterproof and highly absorbent, made from a natural, eco-friendly material like bamboo. Our bamboo pillow protectors also prevent dust mites from entering the pillow to reduce allergies in kids. A machine-washable cushion and pillow cover will also take the hassle out of keeping them fresh and clean.
2. Patterns, colours & textures
This is the fun part. Pillowcases and cushion covers come in a stunning range of designs to suit every bedroom and interior design style. Choose one of our quilt cover sets and get a matching pillowcase that features everything from bright florals to dinosaurs and fuzzy polka dots. Little ones will love our stuffed animal cushions and theme-shaped cushions while older kids will love matching soft fur cushions with fur throws and modern quilts that feature rainbows, waffle weaves and textured florals in dusty rose and blue.
Go bold and colourful or tone it down with sophisticated neutrals that are easy to match with bedroom furniture. Think about the rest of your home decor and choose cushions and pillowcases that will tie in seamlessly with your choices, whether that’s modern and minimal, mid-century modern, boho or something else.
3. Themes
A theme can really take your kids' bedroom to another level. Outrageously fun, our theme cushions, sheets and quilt cover sets let kids create a space that reflects their current interests and vibrant personality.
We’ve got something for everyone. Take laps around the track with a red sports car cushion or slow it down with tractors, London buses and cute combi vans. Dino-lovers will adore our dinosaur cushions that match perfectly with our dinosaur sheets and quilt cover sets for a prehistoric themed bedroom that roars with life.
Fall in love with florals and make a spring-inspired bedroom that’s in bloom all year long. We have flower and plant cushions to go with enchanted garden quilt covers and match with floral wall art and rugs. Got a budding bohemian in the house? Older kids love trendy boho themes and we’ve got earthy rainbow motifs, fluffy cushions and tribal patterns in neutral colours to go with their planters and macrame wall hangings.
Animals are always a fun theme. Turn your child’s bedroom into a jungle oasis with giraffe and lion cushions, safari quilt covers and animal rugs that burst with colour and texture.
4. Size and shape
Standard cushions are square shaped and measure 45cm x 45cm. These cushions look great sitting on a single bed or propped up on a desk chair in the bedroom to provide back support. Our square cushions feature fun designs like friendly giraffes, rainbows and botanicals to mix and match with kids bedding.
Smaller theme cushions, such as unicorns and dinosaurs, are cute and cuddly for younger kids to snuggle up to in bed or carry around with them during the day.
If your kid wants to use their cushions to sit or lie on the floor, choose a larger size to support their body. Square shaped European pillows that measure 65cm x 65cm make wonderful floor cushions and can be placed behind the pillows on the bed when not in use.
Round cushions are cute and add softness to a bedroom. Pop our pom pom cushion in front of a pillow for a simple yet stylish single bed. We also have rectangular cushions that look fantastic as centrepiece cushions at the front of a pile. They’re also super comfy for lying back on to read or take a quick afternoon nap!
5. Practicality and purpose
Think about what your child will be using their pillows and cushions for before making a decision. A standard pillow will typically be used for sleeping on while large and small cushions can provide comfort on the bed and on the floor as well as be decorative accents for the bedroom.
For sleeping pillows, choose a pillow that will support your child and give them a good night’s sleep. At Amart, we have a huge selection of pillows for kids and adults to support every sleeper, from back sleepers to side sleepers. Our memory foam cushions are excellent at contouring themselves to your preferred sleeping position to provide superior neck support and alleviate back pain by reducing the strain on pressure points.
6. The number of cushions
This comes down to the size of your kid’s bed as well as personal preference. One cushion propped up in front of the pillows can be a neat and stylish way to decorate an older child’s bed. On the other hand, a pile of cushions with different colours, patterns and textures looks interesting and invites kids to snuggle up on the bed to read, nap, relax and more. If you are layering cushions, arrange them by size with the largest cushions at the back and the smallest at the front. For a typical kids single bed, usually 1-3 cushions will be enough to add style without making the bed feel overcrowded. For double beds and larger, anywhere between 3-6 cushions is a good rule of thumb.
Will you just have cushions on the bed or will you be scattering some around the room, such as a floor cushion in the corner or a small cushion on a desk chair for doing homework in comfort?
