Cheers to Beautiful Bar Stools
Modern Australian home designs incorporate open plans including extensive outdoor living spaces. If your home includes a kitchen with an island bench or a breakfast bar, a sophisticated outdoor entertaining space, or if you’ve chosen the perfect spot on the deck for your BBQ - you need fabulous bar stools!
Are bar stools comfortable?
It’s a fair question. Admittedly, bar stools don’t provide the comfort and support of recliners and sofas, but it’s worth remembering that bar stools are perfect for active times when standing and sitting are both good options.
In addition, there are dozens of bar stool designs available at Amart, some with padded seats, footrests and backrests, including an elegant taupe linen upholstered bar stool arguably as comfortable as a normal dining chair, just with taller legs!
The Silverwood furniture range includes high back Silverwood MK2 stools in solid acacia and timber veneer with upholstered black or chocolate seats. These bar stools are the perfect match with the Silverwood table and dining room chairs or the matching coffee tables.

What height are bar stools?
Excellent question! Bar stool heights can vary considerably and include what we might call ‘low kitchen counter stools’ and also ‘bar stools’. Measure the height of potential bar stools compared to your existing furniture and counter height.
Bar stools are generally on the taller side and can range in height from approximately 71 cm up to 101 cm.
Is there a correct height for bar stools?
In Australia, the standard kitchen bench height is 90cm, so bar stools approximately 65-66 cm high such as the Bordeaux backless stool and the funky retro Rocket and Harz stools are perfect.
A standard breakfast bar style of kitchen bench measures 105 cm, so bar stools at about 75 cm seat height such as the Harz Bar Stool will be just right for your standard breakfast bar.
How do you measure for bar stools?
There are two important measurements to take before you go shopping for bar stools:
- Height - from floor to underside of the kitchen counter, breakfast bar or table.
- Width - across the full width of the kitchen counter, breakfast bar or table.
- Height:
While there might be standard kitchen bench heights Australia wide, they can vary. Double-check the height to ensure you have plenty of room to sit comfortably on your new bar stools.
TIP: When you’ve found bar stools that you like, ensure you check the seat height measurement on the specifications.
- Width:
Measure the total width of your kitchen counter, breakfast bar or table to work out how many stools will fit comfortably alongside each other. Allow a good 15 cm at least between each bar stool and about 25cms minimum if the bar stools swivel or have arms.
Are bar stools bad for your back?
It depends on the design and height of the bar stool, but if you are being mindful of your posture bar stools shouldn’t be considered bad for your back.
In fact, some will say modern bar stools can help to improve your posture by positioning your feet closer under your body, thereby putting the spine into better alignment. Also, when sitting on a bar stool you are less likely to slouch or slump in an unsupported position.
Do bar stools have to match your furniture?
If you have dining or lounge furniture that sits close to your breakfast bar or kitchen counter where the bar stools are positioned, it makes sense to match furniture choices. Then again, a little tasteful mixing and matching of colour or design can go a long way, as can contrasting home decor selections.
Now is the right time to unleash your inner interior designer for showroom appeal in your home, and Amart Furniture can show you how to achieve the decor results you deserve. While here, check out more living room furniture, dining room furniture, bedroom furniture, and outdoor furniture ideas.
Can you mix and match bar stools?
You can mix and match bar stools to create visual interest and a cool vibe in the room, but how do you make it work?
- Every bar stool needs to have something in common. Totally random won’t work.
- The bar stools can complement or contrast with the room’s style and decor.
- Try using the same stool but in different colours, or light grey/dark grey tones.
- Try wicker bar stools and umbrellas for a tropical vibe outdoors.
- Accessorise with decor and homewares such as pot plants, wall art, rugs, mirrors and more.
